The upcoming Haiti presidential election will be held on November 28, 2010 and there are rumors that Wyclef Jean will run for president. Wyclef hasn’t announced his intention to run but LeDroit and CNN have gathered information regarding the possibility that Wyclef will run for the presidential race.
According to LeDroit, some members of the Haitian community believe that Wyclef could give hope to Haiti and a public figure like him could end corruption often criticized in recent years but others believe that Haiti should be governed by someone who has knowledge in politics. Most of the opposing politicians said that Haiti needs someone who has skill to rule and build their nation and not a performer on stage.
Wyclef told CNN that talk of a campaign is a bit premature but the country’s locals had “drafted” him into politics. This is what he said:
“I can’t sing forever.”
Haitian ambassador to the U.S. and Wyclef’s uncle, Raymond Joseph, said that if ever Wyclef decided to run in the election, his greatest asset is his popularity. There’s no one more popular than him in Haiti. CS Monitor also gathered some information from the ambassador to know whether Wyclef meets Haiti’s six constitutional requirements and it turns out to be that Wyclef could qualify or eligible to run for president.
According to article no. 157 of Chapter III Section C, the presidential candidates should be a native-born Haitian and never have renounced Haitian nationality, have attained thirty (30) years of age, enjoy civil and political rights and never have been sentenced to death, personal restraint or penal servitude or the loss of civil rights, own real property in Haiti and practice a profession there, have resided in the county for five (5) consecutive years, and have been relieved of his responsibilities if he has been handling public funds.
Wyclef’s family confirmed that he has not decided whether he’ll run for presidential race or not but they said that the media will be immediately alerted once the decision is made. For now, Wyclef remains committed to helping people in Haiti through Yele Haiti Foundation.
