High winds and heavy storm hit Washington and it’s considered to be one of the most powerful storm this season. At 11:12 a.m a Blizzard warning was issued and is in effect until 7 p.m. EST. According to National Weather Service, Winds are expected to reach 25 to 35 mph, with local gusts as high as 55 mph and snow accumulations could reach 10-20 inches, with windblown drifts 2-4 feet deep.
Snow will continue through the afternoon and gusty winds will continue this evening.
Washington residents were advised to stay at home. Travel is extremely dangerous today, even life-threatening, due to severe weather condition.
More than 4,000 flights were grounded nationwide. According to Betsy Talton, spokeswoman of Delta Air Lines Inc., they halted flight operations in Washington and also in Philadelphia.
According to Pepco’s website, Washington’s electric supplier, they have pulled out their crews off the streets due to blizzard conditions and this interrupts their round-the-clock powe restoration. They said that restoration will resume as sonn as the conditions improve.
“Safety remains our number one concern. Once we are able to resume work safely, we will have several crews dedicated to restoring those customers that were still without power before the crews were forced to stand down.”
