Defending champion Venus Williams joined her sister Serena into Saturday’s semifinals at the $4.55 million 2009 WTA Tour Championships or known as Sony Ericsson Championships. She advanced on the semifinal round after Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated fellow Russian Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-2 in the concluding Maroon Group match on the final day of round-robin play.
The round robin started last October 27. Elena Dementieva defeated Venus Williams, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Venus try to win on her next match where she faced her sister Serena. But that is another disappointing match. She was crashed by her own sister with the scores: 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Venus got back on track when she beat Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, on her third match last October 29.
Along with the Williams sisters, Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki will join them on the semifinal round this Saturday. Venus will face Jelena Jankovic while her sister Serena will face Caroline Wozniacki. The winners will meet on the final round which will be held on November 1, 2009.
