The UK government is determined on their words that they will not pay for a $7 million ransom to release the couple named Paul and Rachel Chandler from Somali Pirates.
BBC make an exclusive phone interview with the pirates last night and a representative of the Somali pirates said that they will not do any harm to the couple if the police authorities will not attack them. They also demand 7 million dollars ransom in exchange for the couple’s freedom. The UK Foreign Office have given their official statement that the hostage negotiators will not meet the pirates to give their ransom demand.
Though Paul and Rachel Chandler’s family expected that pirates will ask for ransom, they didn’t know about the amount until they heard the news on BBC News 24 and it was confirmed by UK Foreign Office. Mr. Chandler told to BBC News that they are being treated well by the pirates. Though it sounds that he cannot speak freely, he also said that the food is good. Mrs. Chandler said that pirates are hospitable and they told their family not to worry them. But when they were asked if they were in Somalia, Mr. Chandler said that he could not answer that question and it sounds that the captors are pointing guns or pointed objects on him restricting him not to tell where they are located.
Other reports said that the pirates have not yet decided whether to request a deal of $7 million dollar or exchange the couple to seven Somali pirates which was taken by the French navy last week.
According to AOL News, Paul Chandler is a retired construction site manager while his wife Rachel is an economist. They took an early retirement three years ago to take a boat and visit different countries in the world by travelling to the sea with their yacht named “Lynn Rival.” They have sailed to the Greek Islands and they were heading south toward Tanzania. These expeditions were recorded on their blog. They always update their blog and just last October 23, 2009, they stop making an update for this is the day the pirates came to hostage them.
