Sunderland Gave Liverpool Their Fourth Straight Loss

Liverpool was dumped by Sunderland in round number 9 of 2009-2010 Premier League last October 17, 2009 at the Stadium of Light. This was a huge embarrasment to the team because this was their fourth straight loss in this season. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was looking for a good chance to break the curse but the Black Cats stopped them from doing so.

Striker Darren Bent blasted the first goal at 5 minutes in the game. bent’s shot hit the beach ball before going past Liverpool’s goalkeeper Pepe Reina. It was one punched on to the pitch by one of Sunderland’s fans. Liverpool protested that bent should have awarded a dropped ball but referee Mike Jones count it as Sunderland’s first goal in the game. This make the Black Cats ease the pressure and boost their confidence. The match became more intense after Bent’s goal and at 8 minutes in the game, Albanian midfielder Lorik Cana received a yellow card. Liverpool’s Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt received the second yellow card at 29 minutes in the game.

Both teams showed great defense after the first half. Sunderland’s right Winger Jordan Henderson replaced George McCartney at 46 minutes in the game. And at 52 minutes of the game, midfielder Andy Reid received the team’s second yellow card. Another substitution was made at 58 minutes in the game as Dutch midfielder Boudewijn Zenden replaced Lee Cattermole.

The game ended with a final score of 1-0 in favor of Sunderland.
