The Spanish Parliament approved abortion bill last week, December 17, 2009, and this was sent to the senate. The cabinet of the Spain government, headed by President Rodriguez Zapatero, has proposed this bill to make it easier to get an abortion in Spain.
Despite of Catholic Church warning that they will deny communion to Spanish members of parliament who have voted in favor of a bill and millions of people who have taken part in a march in Madrid on October to oppose government plans to liberalize Spain’s abortion law, the abortion bill still got 184 votes against 158 from the main opposition.
The controversial bill will allow abortion until the 14th week of pregnancy and may extend up to 22 weeks if an abortion practitioner certifies a serious threat to the health of the mother. The bill also permits girls aged 16 and 17 to have an abortion even without the consent from their parents.
