MOSCOW – 26 people were killed and 100 were injured when Russian express train, Nevsky Express, derailed at 9:25 PM (18:25 GMT) near Bologoye in Tver Oblast, Russia because of a bomb blast. This 14-car train was carrying 653 passengers, three were foreigners, and 29 are crew members. Interfax reported that the Russian State Reserves Agency Boris Yevstratikov was killed in this in this derailment. According to Guardian, other important senior Kremlin bureaucrats who died are the the chairman of Rosavtodor, the Russian Federal Road agency, Sergei Tarasov, and the deputy head of the Office of Science of Rosrybolovstvo, Lyudmila Mukhina.
President of state-run Russian Railways company, Vladimir Yakunin, said that the company will pay a compensation of 500,000 rubles ($17,240) to the families of the victims and 200,000 rubles ($6,897) to those who were injured.
Spokesman for the Investigative Committee of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Vladimir Markin, said that they are examining the area and conducting an interview with the witnesses. They said that they got lot of information as of now and already know possible suspects but they didn’t further discuss the details.
He said that this was a terrorist attack. He also added that the homemade explosive device which contained 7kg (15.4lb) of TNT detonated on the train route where they found a crater of about 1.5 meters in diameter and 0.7 meters deep. Interfax said that cables found at the Novgorod bomb site resembled those used to blow up a train heading from the Chechen capital, Grozny, to Moscow in 200
President Dmitry Medvedev said on a Russian TV that this may be the start of a new campaign by Chechen revolutionaries.
