Queen Of Ice Kim Yu-Na Of South Korea Wins Gold In Figure Skating And Sets A World Record

Kim Yu-Na soared high on Thursday night, February 25, as she won the gold medal and sets a world record for women’s figure skating (Short Program and Free Skating) held in the Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is South Korea’s first medal at the Winter Olympics in a sport other than speed skating. South Korea currently has 6 golds, 6 silvers, and 2 bronzes all came from speed skating competition except for 1 gold which came from Kim.

The 19-year old from Gyeonggi-do, South Korea is the record holder for ladies in the free skating, short program, and the combined total under the International Skating Union (ISU) Judging System. Kim earned a score of 78.50 in short program and 150.06 in the free skating with a combined score of 228.56. Because of this monstrous score, she becomes the first female skater to surpass the 200-point mark and also the first female skater to receive +2.20 grade of execution for jumps under the ISU Judging System.

She is the 2009 World champion, three-time (from 2006 to 2010) Grand Prix Final champion, the 2009 Four Continents champion, and four-time (2002–2005) South Korean national champion.

Korea Times reported that over 300 companies are hoping to capitalize on Kim’s Olympic triumph. Her talent fee will cost up to 1.2 billion won or 1.04 million US dollars per deal. Kim participated in Hyundai Motor, Samsung Electronics (Samsung Anycall Omnia II), CJ Group, Tous Les Jours, Maeil Dairy, and jewelry maker J.Estina. It was reported that Risport of Italy, the ice skating boots brand which Kim used during the Olympics, plans to have her in the commercial.

The 2008 world champion Mao Asada of Japan won the silver medal. Mao got a total of 205.50 score – 73.78 in the short program and 131.72 in the free skating. Canada’s Joannie Rochette took home the bronze medal.
