Four members of Pishtacos, a gang who kills people in order to sell their fat and tissue, were arrested by Peruvian police. The arrested members confessed that they’ve killed five people and sold their fat to buyers but Col. Jorge Mejia, chief of Peru’s anti-kidnapping police, said that the gang may have been killed not only five but dozens of people. It is said that human fat can be use in cosmetics or surgical procedures. Head of Peru’s police criminal division named General Felix Burga said that an “international network trafficking human fat” was operating in Peru and they had a doubt that there was an international black market for human fat.
The arrested gang members said that their leader Hilario Cudena had been carrying out such murders for three decades. One of them said that a litre of human fat costs $15,000. According to Associated Press, they have illustrated to police how they kill people and how they removed the fat. The gang would cut off its victims’ heads, arms and legs, remove the organs, then suspend the torsos from hooks above candles that warmed the flesh as the fat dripped into tubs below. After they have extracted the fat, they sell it to emissaries in Lima.
The gang’s tactic is that they trick people by offering jobs. It is said that the gang allegedly targeted farmers and indigenous people on remote Andean roads. Police said they were investigating 60 disappearances in the area that might be linked to the gang.
