Obama’s Weekly Address: The Fight Against Al-Qaeda

U.S. President Barack Obama’s cited Al-Qaeda link in the Northwest Flight 253 terrorism plot on his weekly address. His weekly address video footage was released by the White House while he’s on a vacation in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Obama said that an Al-Qaeda affiliate was the one who ordered the 23 year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to detonate plastic explosives hidden in his underwear in the said Christmas Day attack. The U.S’ role in a Yemeni military offensive against al Qaeda in that country is said to be the reason why the Al-Qaeda affliate in Yemen attempted the terrorist attack.

Obama reminded the public that the failed Christmas Day attack is not the first time that Al-Qaeda targeted the U.S. He cited some other attempted terrorist attacks by Al-Qaeda like the bombing of U.S. embassy in 2008 that killed one American.

Obama received the preliminary findings of the reviews regarding the terrorist watchlist system and air travelling screening on Thursday. He directed John Brennan, the Whitehouse counterterrorism and homeland security advisor to lead the reviews.

Obama also said that they are currently investigating the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who boarded the Northwest Airlines Flight 253 without a passport. He said that Umar was trained by the Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, equipped him with explosive devices, and directed him to attack that plane headed for America.

Obama assure the people of the United States that he will do everything that he can do in order to secure America and that is by providing the tools and resources that the law enforcement and the intelligence group needs.
