Samuel Hengel, 15 year-old Wisconsin teen who held his classmate and teacher hostage at Marinette High School, died on Tuesday morning as police approached in the classroom.
Wisconsin police chief Jeff Skorik said that the suspect was pronounced dead at 10:44 a.m.
Zach Campbell, one of the students who were held captive for about 5 hours, appeared in CBS’ Early Show Tuesday morning and narrated the whole incident. Campbell said that Hengel did not harm them. He said that Hengel entered the classroom with two 22-calibre semi-automatic and a 9mm semi-automatic handguns. While they were held captive, he said that Hengel pulled out a gun and shot the wall, desk, and the projector but never aimed them.
Several minutes before the police entered in, Hengel released some of the students because they had to go the toilet.
Police cannot tell the reason behind this hostage situation. Hengel is said to be a good student and has no police records. Campbell also said that they, too, were shocked because Hengel has many friends and never bullied to act like that. Negotiators were sent in and said that Hengel did not ask any demands which made his goal unclear. Chief Skorik said that they’ll find out the reason once they have completed the investigation.
The hostage victims will undergo counseling. Marinette High School announced that there will be no classes this Tuesday.
