The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics should be fun, joyful, and full of hopes and dreams but today isn’t a good day for all. The athletes are mourning after the death Georgian Luge Athlete, Nodar Kumaritashvili, during a practice session today at Whistler Sliding Centre, just hours before the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony 2010. Kumaritashvili is the the son of the head of the Georgian Luge Federation named Selix.
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) was saddened upon hearing the news. Vancouver’s new luge, bobsled, and skeleton track was completed late in 2007 and is considered the fastest in the world. But although the track is the most prone to crashes nobody had died not until today.
The medics present at the practice session, gave Kumaritashvili emergency resuscitation and was flown in the nearby hospital where he died. Irakly Japaridze, the Georgian Olympic delegation head, was stunned and still in deep shock. The Georgian team don’t know whether they’re going to take part in the Opening Ceremony or the entire games.
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge was also in shock and according to the interview made by Associated Press, they had launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Training for now was suspended.
There were no further reports if the luge competition which is set tomorrow will be postponed or not.
