Guillermo Zuloaga, President of Globovision, a 24-hour television news network in Venezuela and the so-called opposition television network, was released 4 hours ago by the 40th Control Court of the Caracas Metropolitan Area after allegedly slandering Venezuela President Hugo Chavez. Though he was released, According to ElUniversal, Judge Jesus Alberto Villarroel said that he is banned from leaving the country because of pending charges against President Chavez.
According to Attorney General Luisa Ortega, a warrant of arrest was issued because Zuloaga was about to leave the country.
Zuloaga was arrested for offensive remarks that he allegedly made during a recent Inter American Press Association meeting in Aruba. Media executives in the said conference criticized Chavez’ government for restricting freedom of expression in Venezuela. Zuloaga was detained at the airport in the northeastern city of Punto Fijo, Falcon. He said that police arrested him in the airport. He explained that he is going for a family vacation and was shocked in the surprise arrest.
Manuel Villalba, Pro-Chavez lawmaker, said that they will investigate Zuloaga’s alleged offensive comment against the Venezuela President.
