WOMEN’S BRONZE MEDAL GAME: FINLAND VS SWEDEN
February 25, 2010 – Finland’s Olympic Women’s Hockey Team won the bronze medal at 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Finland won by an impressive goal from Karoliina Rantamaki at two minutes and 33 seconds left in the overtime period.
Actually, the goal was credited to her teammate and Finnish assistant captain Saara Tuominen, but the video replay clearly showed that it went off a skate in a crowd in front of the Swedish net and past goalkeeper Sara Grahn.
This is what Rantamaki said in an interview made by CBC,
“I knew if I got it in front, we would score. It’s really unbelievable, a great feeling right now. I still can’t believe it. It’s been a long time. I waited 12 years. It was so long that I waited.”
Finland and Sweden weren’t able to score in the first period. Finland’s Rosa Lindstedt and Saija Sirvio got penalties in this early period.
Finland finally took a shot at 4:24 in the second period with defenseman Heidi Pelttari. Sweden’s Maria Rooth scored a power-play goal to tie the score, 1-1, at 12:24.
Michelle Karvinen’s goal with less than 4 minutes left in the second period broke a 1-1 tie but Danijela Rundqvist score to even the score at 5:09 in the third period. Rundqvist’s power play goal sends the game to the overtime period.
