Here we are at the Canada Hockey Place to witness the bronze medal game between Finland and Slovakia. Finland’s Olympic Men’s Hockey Team was the silver medallist at the 2006 Winter Olympics held at the Torino Palasport Olimpico in Turin, Italy. Finland’s hockey players Antero Niittymaki and Teemu Selanne received special awards in the Turin Olympics. Finnish goaltender Niittymaki won the MVP award and received the Directorate Award for best goaltender while Selanne for best forward.

This year’s Winter Olympics, Finland has a great performance. They defeated Czech Republic in the quarterfinal round (See this page – Finland vs Czech Republic) but unfortunately not good enough to beat United States in the semifinal round. United States scored for 6 goals while Finland just got one goal from Antti Miettinen with less than five minutes left in the third period.

Finland currently has one goal from defenseman Sami Salo’s power-play goal. It was the first goal in the game. Even though, Slovakia remained scoreless in the first period, they were on fire here in the second period. Marian Gaborik’s power-play goal at 9:56 in the second period gave his team their first goal in the game. Followed by Marian Hossa’s power-play goal at 15:38. At 18:45, Slovaki’s center Pavol Demitra added another goal. Demitra’s short handed goal make it a two-point lead.

The game is not yet over. If Slovakia scored in the second period, Finland dominated in the third period. Olli Jokinen, who currently plays for New York Rangers, contributed two goals in this period – one goal at 6:41 and another goal at 8:41. Niklas Hagman’s power-play goal at 5:06 broke Finland’s silence and scored for his team’s second goal in the game. Valtteri Filppula, who plays for Detroit Red Wings, scored an empty net goal and sealed Finland’s victory, 5-3.
