elizabeth-smart-mother-confronted-kidnapper-barzeeAlmost eight years since Elizabeth Smart was abducted by kidnappers, Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee, The Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case is still on-going. The trial takes several years because the couple, Barzee and Mitchelle, were found incompetent to stand trial.

It was more than seven years before one of her captors, Wanda Barzee, finally put into prison. On November 17, 2009, she was pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. But Elizabeth’s parents, Lois and Ed Smart, was not satisfied with the court’s decision. They believed that Barzee’s sentence was not “strong enough.”

On May 21, Lois confronted Barzee and this is what she said:

“What you did to Elizabeth and our family was wrong and evil. You hurt our family in ways you’ll never know. It was unconscionable what you did to my daughter. I hope you will be able to make peace with your maker.”

Barzee’s husband, Mitchell, is considered as unfit to stand the trial and remained at the State of Utah hospital for several years. On December 1 2009, psychiatric test shows that Mitchell has faked psychiatric symptoms and behaviors to avoid prosecution. And on March 1, 2010, U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball, described Mitchell as an “effectively misleading psychopath” and declared that Mitchell is competent to stand the trial. Barzee will agreed to testify against Mitchell, whose trial will begin this November.
