Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi confirmed to CNN that a woman jumped a barrier to reach Pope Benedict XVI to begin the traditional Christmas Eve mass at 10 p.m.
According to a news report, Pope Benedict XVI was walking down the aisle when a woman tried to touch the pope and grabbed onto his vestments. The security lifted the pope up. Some of the worshippers screamed while others pull out their cameras to catch the scene.
The security guards detained the said woman but they did not disclose her name. The woman’s intention is just to be close to the pope and does not mean any harm.
Pope Benedict XVI wants the public to know that he’s fine. The mass was just interrupted by several minutes and after the incident, the mass continues.
