British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has stayed overnight with UK troops in Afghanistan. It was an unannounced visit and very unusual but he slept in “basic quarters” at the Kandahar air base located in south-east of Kandahar City in Afghanistan. It was not officially announced until Sunday for some security reasons.
Taliban attacks Kandahar area one or two times a week but Brown has been visiting his troops and stayed a night with them to support and to show them his deepest gratitude in maintaining peace and security in Afghanistan. On Sunday, he talked with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in fighting corruption, restoring peace, and improving security in Afghanistan.

In a joint press conference, Brown offered condolences to the families of 100 British soldiers who have died in the war this year. Karzai also felt sorry about the British troops killed and wounded in Afghanistan.
“I am terribly sorry for them losing their sons and daughters, as we are sorry for us losing our sons and daughters in Afghanistan.”

Brown will send an extra 500 soldiers and there will be an extra 10,000 Afghan troops to southern Afghanistan to complement President Obama’s decision to send 3,000 additional American troops.
