It was a tough game for Bayern Munich but they were able to win in a very tight game against Olympic Lyonnaise. Bayern defeated Lyon in the UEFA Champions League semifinal first leg. Over 68,000 people witnessed the live game at the Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany.
Lyon travelled far and were forced to make the journey by road after the ash cloud caused by Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull brought about the closure of much of Europe’s airspace. Bayern already predicted that Lyon will not be in good shape anymore at the start of the game after that long journey. But they expected that Lyon will remain competitive. Yes, they remain competitive but they were’nt able to stop Robben from scoring for the first and only goal in the game.
It was a scoreless game in the first half until Dutch winger Arjen Robben scored in the 69th minute. Robben distracted the Lyon defense before picking out the wide-open striker Mario Gomez at the back post. Gomez gets his head to the ball, but it bounces weakly into goalkeeper Hugo Lloris’ hands. Robben fires a rocket from 30 yards and hammered it goalwards! The ball takes a slight touch off the top of attacking midfielder Thomas Muller’s head which took it past to Lloris.
