Baghdad Car Bombings: Over 130 Killed And Over 700 Injured

BAGHDAD, IRAQ — Two car bombings hit the Mesopotamia capital, today at 9:30 AM which is said to have killed over 130 people and over 700 were injured. It was the deadliest attack in Iraq since the 2007 Yazidi communities bombings or known as Qahtaniya bombings in August 14, 2007. The Iraqi government said that it was made by Al-Qaeda and supporters of ex-dictator Saddam Hussein’s banned Baath Party.

According to an investigation, the two cars used are packed with 1,500 pounds explosives and blew up just outside Baghdad’s Green Zone. The bombs targeted the Baghdad Provincial Council government office and Iraq’s Ministry of Justice building. The Ministry of Justice building is not wholly destroyed, only part of it was damaged. 25 staff of Provincial council and 35 employees of the Ministry of Justice are recorded dead. It was confirmed that among more than 700 people wounded were three American contractors.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki went to the bomb site and saw the flooded areas near the provincial government building where firefighters pulled the burned and torn bodies of the dead. He said to his people that they should not let this attack affect their determination in fighting against terrorism. But this incident criticized his ability to govern and maintain peace, and secure the city.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Hassan Kazemi Qomi said that this bomb attacks is an indication that there would be more security challenges to come to scare people in the upcoming parliamentary election. And according to Tehrantimes, he noted that the United States has made no efforts to help Iraq establish a strong army and police force that could counter terrorism.
