Tiger Woods relishing Sunday challenge at Valspar Championship

He was the only player in the field who shot in the 60s in each. "Tiger!" Others were yelling, "U-S-A!" It all started there for Woods, who clearly feels better than he has in years.

The 14-time Major victor then went into a share of the lead with a birdie at the par-5 fifth hole before the highlight of his round when he chipped-in from some 30-feet behind the flag at the uphill par-4 ninth hole, and with the third birdie of his round momentarily taking Woods into the lead.

Woods has never been so close to winning since his last victory in the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone in 2013. But this was the first time he has holed a shot from off the green this year. I keep getting a little bit better here and there, making these little subtle tweaks. "I'm really looking forward to it".

One of the most impressive aspects of Woods' return has been his short game.

"The people were pumped up, " said Joe LaCava, his caddie. He hasn't won a tournament when trailing going into the final round since the AT&T National at Congressional in 2012.

Woods enjoyed a stroke of good fortune on the par-five fifth when his hooked drive appeared to hit a cart path and bounce back on to the fairway. Initially there was fear he might not break 80 for a time, but the highest score he has shot so far is the 76 in the second round of the Genesis Open, where he missed the cut three weeks ago.

And here he is, one shot out of the lead, and knowing that his work is not done.

"I was playing well all day. I made a few tweaks overnight which I didn't like about yesterday". "That's definitely a statistic I need to go into tomorrow with giving confidence", he said. Obviously it's not. I really remember that and all those good feelings.

He drained a putt from 22 feet for birdie at No. 10 underneath an overcast sky similar in color to his dark gray slacks and cap, contrasting Woods' bright pink Nike shirt that helped him stand out in a crowd even more than normal. "Or am I going to be like this?"

In today's final round he will once again be paired with Brandt Snedeker in the next to last group.

He will play with Woods again in the final round.
