Studies said to expose humans, monkeys to toxic vehicle fumes

LRRI also came under fire after six guinea pigs suffocated when they were tightly packed inside a small enclosure to be transported-and left there for almost an hour.

Going further, the same scientist claimed under oath that the monkey study had been incomplete and that the client had urged them to continue their work into 2017.

The EUGT was dismantled previous year and could not be reached for comment. The initials stand for European Research Group on Environment and Health in the Transport Sector.

"What automakers have to do with emissions is to reduce them and not pretend to prove that they are not harmful with the help of experiments with monkeys and even with humans", said government spokesman Steffen Seibert.

"Vile", is how German environment minister Barbara Hendricks described the revealed experiments. "Lobbying can be no excuse whatsoever for such testing", he said. Europe led the ban on cosmetics tested on animals which affected United States makers where no ban on animal testing exists.

According to The New York Times, EUGT did not conduct any research itself, rather, it hired scientists to conduct investigations that would "defend the use of diesel", using research that, among other things, challenged the World Health Organization's classification of the fuel as a carcinogen.

German carmakers have promised to swiftly investigate experiments that exposed people and monkeys to diesel fumes, disclosures that threaten to open a new phase in an emissions controversy that's dogged the industry since 2015.

Then at the weekend Germany's Stuttgarter Zeitung and SWR radio reported that 19 men and six women had inhaled diesel fumes in another EUGT experiment.

A Netflix documentary alleged that German luxury auto makers, including Mercedes-Benz, used monkeys to test the effects of their diesel engines in relation to health.

In response to the revelations, German media is reporting that Volkswagen apologised for the studies and said a number of its employees were aware of the tests, while Daimler has distanced itself, saying it was unaware of the nature of the trials.

"This is another hit for diesel and shows how carmakers overstepped the mark morally and ethically in their fight to make diesel socially acceptable", said Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive Management in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany.

The report insisted an experiment funded by Volkswagen, Daimler, supplier Robert Bosch and BMW forced 10 monkeys to watch cartoons in an airtight room while breathing in tailpipe fumes from a VW Beetle.

In an additional twist, the VW Beetle model used in the test with animals was among the vehicles rigged to cheat on emissions tests, the New York Times reported.

"We apologize for the misconduct and the lack of judgment of individuals", Volkswagen said in a statement.

The tests haven't had any negative consequences for the health of either the animals or the humans, but the news has caused public outcry, with many people arguing that those responsible for the initiative must be punished. The industry has had to fend off calls for diesel bans in German cities with high pollution levels.
