Oxfam accused of failing in its 'moral leadership' over Haiti sex scandal

The hardening stance follows reports in The Times that young sex workers were hired by Oxfam's senior staff in Haiti after the 2010 quake which devastated the island and left up to 300,000 people dead, and that the UK-based charity tried to cover up the scandal at the time.

Alleged misconduct by former Oxfam staff members included the use of prostitutes, downloading pornography, bullying and intimidation, according to an investigation by The Times.

Mordaunt said she would also be meeting with Oxfam's representatives on Monday, adding: "I'm very clear it doesn't matter whether you've got a whistle-blowing hotline, it doesn't matter if you've got good safeguarding practices in place".

The news comes after Oxfam workers were accused of using prostitutes in Haiti following the 2010 natural disaster.

In the wake of reports on misconduct by Oxfam staff in Haiti, Christian Aid has issued the following statement today, outlining its policy on dealing with claims of sexual harassment.

"I am deeply ashamed about Oxfam's behaviour then", CEO Mark Goldring told ITV News.

A senior member of staff, Roland van Hauwermeiren, led the mission in Chad as well as the Oxfam's work in Haiti, but resigned from the charity in 2011.

Everybody - the 25,000 staff and volunteers - are compromised by this, the hundreds of thousands of people who support Oxfam every month are compromised by this, and to everybody I apologise, he said.

"I have so much respect for Oxfam, they do great work, but this is a sector wide problem", the former staffer told the Observer.

Justice Department's third-highest ranking official resigns
When asked if he was considering firing Rosenstein after the memo's release last Friday, Trump said, "You figure that one out". In a statement, Brand defended her department, saying, "The men and women of the Department of Justice impress me every day".

It confirmed asking Oxfam to urgently provide fresh information. They initially said they were investigating misconduct, and when they concluded that report they did not tell us the nature of these events.

Charities, including Oxfam, have been told they will have funding withdrawn if they fail to comply with authorities over safeguarding issues.

DfID said Oxfam had "serious questions" to answer following the revelations.

In a further warning, she said: "If they do not hand over all the information that they have from their investigation and subsequently to the relevant authorities, including the Charity Commission and prosecuting authorities, then I can not work with them any more as an aid delivery partner".

In its statement, Oxfam said it had informed its trustees, the government, as well as other major donors such as the European Union, the World Health Organization and other United Nations agencies of the investigation and the outcome.

Marr said: 'That was a lie, wasn't it?'

Mr Goldring's words come after the Department for International Development said late Friday that the charity had shown a "lack of judgement" in its investigations following the 2010/11 incidents.

The government's hardening stance follows reports in The Times newspaper that young sex workers were hired by Oxfam's senior staff in Haiti after the 2010 natural disaster which devastated the island and left up to 300,000 people dead.
