IDC: Google Sold A "Tiny" 3.9M Pixel Phones In 2017

IDC: Google Sold A

The Pixel range debuted in 2016 and got a refresh late past year, which brought us the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, so it's a relatively new brand when compared to iPhone and Galaxy S. Its availability is also limited to a handful of markets.

Turns out, though, that while it may be vocal, that user base isn't exactly huge. The Pixel and Pixel 2 devices are only available in up to eight countries, compared to the iPhone X, for example, that may be purchased in 70 countries.

Google Pixel and Pixel 2 sales doubled to 3.9 million units in 2017.

Why Can't Google Pixel Catch Up To The iPhone?

The Google Pixel smartphones were supposed to be Android's answer to Apple's iPhone.

IDC's Research Director, Francisco Jeronimo, reports Google shipped 3.9 million units in 2017, remarking it is "still a tiny portion of the 1.5 billion market size". Based on its most recent sales figures, Apple was selling nearly 850,000 iPhones each day in the first quarter of 2018. The company needs to figure out what makes the Pixel special.

Though there are undoubtedly many reasons why Pixel sales were so disappointing, the most problematic is its lack of retail presence. Chinese vendors such as Huawei and OnePlus have been unable to penetrate the U.S. market primarily because they haven't yet succeeded in striking deals with the United States carriers. This would mean that Apple shipped more iPhones per week than the number of Google Pixel and Pixel 2 smartphones for the whole of 2017. In the USA, 90% of smartphones are sold via wireless carriers. For the full year 2017, HMD Global produced 11.5 million units. There is a partnership this year with Verizon and more visible marketing, but it seems this hasn't translated into massive sales. Do you think 3.9 million shipments is a good milestone for Google's second year as a hardware company, or were you expecting more?
