Vaping too causes cancer, says study

Also, since many e-cigarette users are either former or current smokers, it can be hard to determine whether the cancer risk comes from smoking or vaping.

The researchers say that more work is needed to see whether vaping really does increase cancer rates.

The report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences did not compare the cancer-causing potential of traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes.

For another part of the experiment, the scientists exposed cultured human cells to large quantities of nicotine in a lab and found similar effects on DNA damage and fix.

Tang exposed mice to e-cigarette smoke for three hours a day, five days a week for three months.

"It is therefore possible that E-cigarette smoke may contribute to lung and bladder cancer, as well as heart disease, in humans", the researchers wrote in their study, which was published in the journal PNAS on January 29.

That is similar to the level in those on nicotine-replacement therapy.

They also pointed out that cardiovascular disease, not cancer, is the greatest risk of premature death for a smoker, causing nearly half of premature deaths (48%) among smokers.

The US, however, has imposed new sanctions on North Korea and Chinese firms and individuals that support Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

The researchers also exposed cultured human bladder and lung cells to nicotine and found the same effects they have observed in experiments involving mice. Their organs were likewise less able to fix DNA. There are still some questions about long-term safety, as e-cigarettes haven't been around that long.

This breakthrough follows on from a report published a week earlier (23 January), in which it was suggested that e-cigarettes can help adults to quit smoking conventional cigarettes.

The researchers said that if the findings will be confirmed in future studies, it could mean that e-cigarettes, always been considered to be the safer alternative to traditional cigarette and tobacco products, also carry cancer risk through the nicotine that they deliver.

Last week a major United States report into the health effects of e-cigarettes found that vaping might be useful to help people quit smoking. But the evidence is pointing towards them being far less harmful than tobacco.

"Research in people has shown that those who make a complete switch from smoking tobacco to e-cigarettes can significantly reduce their exposure to key harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke".

This latest study is not, by itself, conclusive. "From raising the age to purchase tobacco to regulating e-cigarettes, we are creating Chicago's first tobacco-free generation".

They pointed out that e-cigarettes were rapidly gaining popularity, especially among young people who regard them as harmless.
