The protest is against the Prime Minister "not intervening" to resolve the Mahadayi river water sharing dispute between Karnataka and Goa.

Seeking PM's intervention on the ongoing river water dispute, Vatal Nagaraj, who heads "Kannada Okoota", an organistaion of Kannada bodies which led the protest march from town hall to Freedom Park in Bengaluru, was quoted by PTI as saying, "Bandh has got very good response".

When the Mahadayi River Water Disputes Tribunal in Delhi begins its hearing on February 6, it will expose both the national parties in Karnataka as neither has pursued the matter even though the Mahadayi agitation by farmers in north Karnataka region entered the 900th day on January 1.

Shopkeepers in Bengaluru said that the cadres of Karnataka Rakshana Vedhike will come soon to shut things down and till then they will keep the shops open.

On 25 January, BJP president Amit Shah will be in Mysuru to participate in the "Parivarthana Yathre" of BJP leader and former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa. However, they acknowledge that the issue is also being used by Congress to settle political scores in the run up to the polls.
