'Dedicated' detective still in serious condition after Maroubra pub stabbing

A senior NSW police officer is recovering in hospital after he was twice stabbed by an alleged child sex offender he was attempting to arrest.

The wounded detective sergeant and his partner, from a specialist command, were at the Maroubra Junction Hotel about 3pm to arrest Newman, 33, from Sydney's west.

Police say Det Sgt Breda was stabbed during a "confrontation" and Newman was shot dead by two other officers who had gone with him to the pub.

Nick Newman was wanted by police after he failed to turn up to court on Wednesday.

"One patient with multiple stab wounds was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a serious condition", the spokeswoman said.

The officers who shot Newman were "traumatised", according to Mr Walton, who said police were "very concerned" about the injured detective sergeant's condition.

'I was vacuuming here at work and I heard gunshots from a couple of doors away.
