China Claims US Warship Violated Its Sovereignty

Beijing has accused Washington of violating China's sovereignty after USA missile destroyer USS Hopper sailed near the shoal, a traditional fishing ground located 124 nautical miles off Zambales.

The South China Morning Post reported another ministry spokesman said the Hopper was within 12 nautical miles of the island on Wednesday.

"We strongly urge the US side to immediately correct its mistake and stop making such provocative moves so as to avoid undermining China-US relations and regional peace and stability", he said. Wu said a Chinese missile destroyer had to drive off the USS Hopper, a US guided missile destroyer, after the ship ventured near Huangyan Island, which is near the western coast of the Philippines.

Chinese media outlet Xinhua stated on Saturday that the China's Ministry of National Defense has told the usa not to "cause trouble out of nothing", and to respect the sovereignty of China.

But it added, "the United States has repeatedly sent warships illegally into the adjacent waters of the South China Sea islands and reefs".

"China respects and safeguards the freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea for all countries in accordance with global law, but resolutely opposes any country's move to impair China's sovereignty and security interests in the name of freedom of navigation and overflight", the spokesperson said. Beijing considers any United States patrols within 12 nautical miles of the islands as an intrusion into its territorial waters.

"It has asked China not to build on the shoal, which China has not".

Sharapova and Kerber in third round blockbuster
Madison Keys of the United States defeated Ana Bogdan of Romania 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the fourth round of the Australian Open. Kerber's year-end ranking dropped from No. 1 in 2016 to 21 a year ago , when she failed to defend her Australian or U.S.

The mission of USS Hopper mission in Asia involves "security cooperation, building partner capacity, and performing routine operations within the area". The tribunal ruled a year ago that the "nine-dash line" which underpins Beijing's claim to most of the South China Sea had no legal basis.

Beijing dispatched a warship to see off a USA missile destroyer which it says has "violated" its sovereignty in the South China Sea.

China effectively seized the shoal - a prime fishing spot - from the Philippines in 2012 after a tense standoff.

"We do not wish to be part of a US-China intramural". Nicole Schwegman, a U.S. Pacific Fleet spokeswoman, said in an email.

The US has criticised China for constructing islands and military installations in the region, saying they could be used to restrict free nautical movement.

Zhang said she expected to see more frequent confrontations between the United States and Chinese militaries in the South China Sea, with Washington putting China and Russian Federation at the centre of its new national defence strategy.
