Apple issues Meltdown and Spectre fixes for older MacBooks

Additionally, Apple has also released macOS El Capitan 10.11.6, macOS Sierra 10.12.6, which fixed the recently found Meltdown bug, and macOS High Sierra 10.13.3.

While Apple's security team is mum on such issues, many experts now expect the company to backport the Spectre flaw to older macOS versions in a future update as well, and maybe backport the patches for older iOS versions too. And the company also dropped a number of software updates overnight that patch older versions of macOS/OS X against Spectre and Meltdown as well as addressing other problems right across their full suite of operating systems. The update also fixes issues like a maliciously crafted audio file leading to arbitrary code execution and one where an application could run arbitrary code using kernel privileges. It also introduces fixes for several other security issues, according to Apple's support document.

The macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 Update improves the stability and security of your Mac and is recommended for all users.

Shutdown poll: voters blame Republicans over Democrats
Some sites were closed, including Philadelphia's Liberty Bell, but visitors had access to other sites such as Yellowstone. McConnell's promise of a full floor debate is perhaps more than the GOP had originally been willing to concede.

To download and install the security update, open the App Store app on your Mac, click on Updates in the toolbar, and click the Update button next to the appropriate software update. Enter your Apple ID credentials in the provided box. Installing the update will restart your computer.

macOS Sierra and its predecessor OS X El Capitan were not initially patched, with Apple opting to release a supplemental security update only for macOS 10.13.2 on January 8.

Apple previously issued mitigations for the two Spectre flaws along with a temporary (and now superseded) workaround for Meltdown in the days after the bugs were disclosed.
