SMU's Chad Morris emerges as top target at Arkansas

The Arkansas football program reportedly has named its next head coach. A deal could be worked out as soon as Wednesday.

Before SMU, Morris spent four seasons at Clemson, where he helped turn the Tigers into an offensive power house with his "tempo" approach and played a major role in the recruitment of quarterback Deshaun Watson, now with the Houston Texans. He has since led the Mustangs from two wins to five wins to a shot at seven wins this year.

Morris' name has been associated with the opening since before former head coach Bret Bielema was hired, the day after Bielema was sacked and throughout the search.

After a flurry of hires were made on Tuesday, news surfaced in the evening that Chad Morris will be leaving the SMU Mustangs to take over in Fayetteville.

Morris emerged as Arkansas' pick to replace Bret Bielema after Auburn's Gus Malzahn turned down the Hogs last weekend.

Arkansas' search began without an athletic director; Jeff Long was also fired last month. This season, SMU ranks among the top 15 in the FBS in scoring offense (40.2 points), total offense (493.8 yards) and passing yards (308 yards).

Morris is the man who coached former Texas QB Garrett Gilbert at Lake Travis outside of Austin, and prior to those years, he was at Stephenville, another Texas powerhouse, along with Bay City, Elysian Fields and Eustace.

Morris is considered one of the top offensive-minded coaches in college football. "That's who I am", said Morris, a Dallas native, when he was hired at SMU in 2014.

Just more than a week after ending the 2017 season with a 4-8 record and firing their head coach, Arkansas has found their new leader of the football program.
