Google Assistant now on tablets and older pre-Marshmallow Android smartphones

In a blog post, Google announced that it will come to tablets running Android 7.0 Nougat and 6.0 Marshmallow. should you actually own and Android tablet. Initially announced in May 2016 at the Google I/O, the virtual assistant was launched to compete against the Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa. Rather, an icon in users' "All Apps" lists will be present that can bring up the AI bot. Google Assistant in Spanish is being introduced to US, Mexico and Spain.

Assistant on tablets will allow users to use their voice to set reminders, add to shopping lists (that are also synced across to your Android phone), and control smart home devices including lights and plugs.

It's coming to Android Lollipop phones as well as Android Marshmallow and Nougat tablets. As of December 11th, only 0.5% Android smartphones are running on the latest Android 8.0 Oreo, and the years-old Android Lollipop is still on 26.3% smartphones.

With Android Oreo Go, Google has implemented key performance and storage improvements so that low-end devices can do more with less. According to Google Assistant Program Manager Maksim Mukha, "The Assistant on tablets will be rolling out over the coming weeks to users with [their device's language] set to English in the U.S".

The makers of Shazam has created a revenue of $54 million in 2016 which will now be pulled by Apple after this deal. It would remain to be seen how Apple would integrate Shazam , which also faces competitors such as SoundHound.

As we mentioned earlier, Google Assistant is powered by an AI algorithm and lets users interact with their device in two mediums - texting and vocally.

In select countries, users can even send money via voice on Google Assistant.

However, despite making Google Assistant available to Android versions that are three years old, the digital assistant will still not be enjoyed by about 20 percent of Android users.
