Emirates stops flying to Tunisia

Emirates said it would stop operating its Dubai-Tunis connection following instructions from the North African country.

Emirates said on Twitter it would stop its Dubai-Tunis connection from Monday following instructions from Tunisia.

Tunisia's transport ministry said in a statement that the Arab carrier would be suspended until it found a way to operate according to global law and treaties.

This new tension between Tunis and Abu Dhabi comes as Tunisian women had said their travel to the Gulf state on UAE airlines had been delayed and some had been forced to undergo additional examination of their visas, which triggered angry reactions on social media and media outlets in Tunisia.

On Friday, the Tunisian government added that it had asked the UAE ambassador to clarify what was happening and had been told that the measures were temporary and had already been lifted.

The UAE's minister of state for foreign affairs Anwar Gargash also cited security as the reason for the travel restriction.

British Minister of State for Digital Matthew Hancock tweeted that the account suspensions were a "good step forward" for Twitter. Besides being banned from profile photos, hate images may be further restricted where national laws require, as in Germany.

He also said that the UAE "appreciates and respects Tunisian women", adding that "we should avoid attempts at interpretation and errors".

As per local media, the women of Tunisia were banned from boarding on Emirates for many days.

"When we arrived here, we found the situation really chaotic". Is this logical? It's degrading.

Sources suggest that there were intelligence reports regarding young Tunisian women (under the age of 30) who had returned from Syria or Iraq having been fighting with Daesh and were targeting aviation.

In a statement on Friday, Tunisia's Ministry of Transport said such actions were "illegal" and "contradictory to the regulations in force in worldwide civil aviation".
