Donald Trump tells NASA to send Americans to Moon

Jack Schmitt, one of the most recent men to have walked on the moon, Trump described the directive, portraying space exploration as an encapsulation of America's "pioneering spirit".

President Trump will sign a directive on Monday afternoon aimed at shifting NASA's resources and attention toward the moon and Mars, according to a statement from the White House.

In a release noting highlights of the administration's space policy, the White House said Trump would "create incentives for private industry" to assist in pursuing its goals of exploration and the development of new technology.

'We will establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars, and perhaps someday, to many worlds beyond'.

"The directive I'm signing today will refocus America's space program on human exploration and discovery", Trump said during the ceremony.

The event will coincide with the 45th anniversary of the last crewed mission to land on the moon.

President Trump on Monday ordered NASA to send astronauts back to the moon and then eventually to Mars, part of the administration's focus on manned space exploration. President George W. Bush had called for Nasa to return astronauts to the moon by 2020, a mission that Obama ended out of cost concerns.

Rupert Murdoch's LA home 'burning down' in wildfire
Meanwhile Rupert Murdoch's estate- which is one of the most expensive in the Los Angeles city limits- has also been evacuated. Some 1,000 firefighters battled to save homes, with one suffering a minor injury, Welsbie said.

Space Policy Directive 1 makes official a recommendation approved by the NSC in October.

"Mr. President, you've said that the pioneer spirit has always defined America", Pence said.

"This is a giant step toward that inspiring future", Mr. Trump said.

The White House didn't provide details about how NASA's work to return to the moon would be funded, or whether any current programs would be cut.

Nasa's Acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot welcomed the announcement. "No human has walked there since", the statement said.

SpaceX launches rockets for customers including Nasa, commercial satellite operators and the American military. The Space Policy Directive 1 will "more effectively organize government, private industry, and worldwide efforts toward returning humans [to] the Moon, and will lay the foundation that will eventually enable human exploration of Mars", agency officials said.

Vice President Mike Pence, chairman of the council, has since had vowed to renew American leadership in the form of the nation's space program.
