Three dead and children injured in California school shooting

At least three people are dead after a shooting in rural Northern California Tuesday morning, CBS Sacramento reports.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said that around one hundred law enforcement personnel were investigating five separate scenes relating to the incident.

It wasn't immediately clear if the initial death count included the shooter.

Brian Flint told local media his neighbor was the shooter, and that the neighbor had stolen his truck.

At least three children and one adult were brought to the Enloe Medical Centre, in Chico, California, the hospital confirmed to KHSL. Police recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns they believed were used by the shooter. He wrote: "My mom just called me, there was a shooting at my little brother's school, 2 kids have been shot, parents are dead, my mother saw this and was in the middle of it".

The violence started with an apparent domestic dispute, according to neighbors, and spread out with the suspect "randomly picking targets", Johnston said.

FSU president John Thrasher said he did not have a timeframe for how long the suspension would last. Individuals who fail to adhere to the new policy could receive immediate disciplinary action.

"I know that we have medevaced a number of students", Johnston said.

He said there were seven shooting scenes and that there may be more victims.

Rancho Tehama Elementary is a small school, serving students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Flint said he and his roommate told authorities that their neighbor was acting "crazy" and threatening them.

Separately, three people were being treated at a hospital in Redding, about 80km north of the shootings.

"The insane thing is the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately - hundreds of rounds, large magazines", Flint said. She declined to provide other details about the victims or their injuries.
