In addition to the Greek life suspension, Thrasher ordered a ban on alcohol at all events hosted by recognized student organizations.

Police arrived at the home on Buena Vista Drive shortly after 10:30 a.m. Friday and found Coffey unresponsive.

Florida State University is suspending all of its fraternities and sororities indefinitely after the recent death of a fraternity pledge and the arrest of a member for selling drugs.

FSU president John Thrasher said he did not have a timeframe for how long the suspension would last. He died on the scene.

Coffey was reportedly a pledge for the Phi Kappa Pi Fraternity. The exact circumstances surrounding Coffey's death remained unclear, though it appeared alcohol may have been a factor, officials said. "There must be a new culture, and our students must be full participants in creating it". The same day, a 20-year-old student who was a member of FSU's Phi Delta Theta fraternity was charged with selling cocaine, the school said. And the FSU chapter was sanctioned by the national office in 2012, 2014, and 2015, though no misconduct allegations were filed in the previous year. "But our students and their organizations on campus must step up". FSU has more than 700 such organizations outside of the Greek community. They will also have the opportunity to attend judicial hearings, leadership classes and risk management education courses. "They will have to participate in the solution". Individuals who fail to adhere to the new policy could receive immediate disciplinary action. According to Thrasher, he and the administration feel they need to implement changes to fraternity and sorority life to benefit the safety and well-being of students.
