United States 'ready' to lift decades-old sanctions on Sudan

Despite Washington's decision to formally revoke some economic sanctions against Sudan, the country will still remain on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The White House statement said lifting the sanctions would be postponed for six months to encourage the Sudanese government to maintain its human rights and counter-terrorism efforts.

Sudan also has recently distanced itself diplomatically from Iran, another US arch-foe.

"Sudan regards it as a positive development in the history of the Sudanese-U.S. relations and a natural outcome of a frank, transparent and constructive dialogue that reviewed all concerns between the two countries", it added.

Explaining the end of the sanctions, USA officials said the authoritarian regime had maintained a cessation of hostilities in Darfur and other old flashpoints.

The US also secured a commitment from Sudan that it would "not pursue an arms deals" with North Korea in order to isolate Pyongyang diplomatically, according another US official.

A U.S. official said on Friday, that the United States has lifted 20-year economic sanctions on Sudan, attributing it to improvements in human rights and counter-terrorism acts.

Bob Goodlatte noted Sudan's "historical support of global terrorism" and argued the US must first secure commitments that American victims and their families will be compensated.

Bashir, who has ruled Sudan since 1989, is accused by the ourt of committing genocide in Darfur.

While the process has been underway all year, Sudan's green light comes at a perplexing time: The United States just included Chad - one of America's closest counter-terrorism partners in Africa - in its updated travel ban. According to the United Nations, since 2003 when ethnic groups rebelled against the government at least 300,000 people have been killed and over 2.5 million have been displaced. The sanctions were later reinforced due to the civil conflict in the Darfur area.

In response, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry issued a statement, saying, "The leaders of Sudan, the government of Sudan and the people of Sudan welcome the positive decision taken by American President Donald Trump of removing the economic sanctions completely".

The US state department announced its decision to revoke the penalising measures - in place since 1997 - on Friday.
