Senators reveal first findings in Russian Federation probe

"The committee continues to look into all evidence to see if there was any hint of collusion", Burr told reporters during a press conference regarding the status of the Russian Federation investigation Wednesday afternoon.

He was joined by committee chairman, Sen.

Senator Burr said that Russian Federation also created false accounts to "drive interests toward stories or groups ... to drive division".

The information on Trump collected by Steele, whom officials say was one of MI6's most respected Russian Federation hands, was laid out past year in political "opposition research" initially financed by supporters of one of Trump's Republican primary election opponents.

"We hope we will very soon reach some definite conclusion", Burr said, without setting a target deadline.

After initially saying their networks played only minor roles in Russia's disinformation campaigns, both companies are under pressure from the committees to provide more information about Russian-backed messages and ads that sought to pit Americans against each other before, during and after the election.

Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina says his committee doesn't make documents provided to it public and that includes the contents of the ads.

More recently investigators for the committee and the House Intelligence Committee have sharpened their attention on Russia's use of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.

Facebook officials have said that 10 million people saw Russia-linked advertising that sought to sway the USA presidential election on the social media platform, and 44 percent of those were seen before the election.

Republican committee chairman Richard Burr and ranking Democrat Mark Warner have scheduled a news conference to disclose the conclusions they have reached and plans to prevent Russian meddling in future USA elections, according to sources familiar with their plans.

Richard Burr, R-North Carolina, said that "the issue of collusion is still open" regarding the committee's ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

He noted the committee had "hit a wall" in its effort to interview Christopher Steele, the author of a controversial dossier containing explosive allegations about Trump and top members of his campaign, and he called on Steele to meet with the panel. Mark Warner of Virginia.

Burr told reporters the committee plans to conduct 25 more interviews with witnesses this month, with a goal of finishing the main congressional investigation into Russian meddling in the election by the end of 2017. Russian officials have called the United States allegations of election meddling absurd and invented to deflect public attention from actual instances of revealed election fraud and corruption as well as other issues. CNN reported Wednesday that some of the ads specifically targeted MI and Wisconsin, two states that were critical to President Donald Trump's victory.

Though the two top members of the intelligence panel declined to set a date for the end of their investigation, Burr made it clear he wanted candidates and election officials to benefit from those conclusions before midterm elections.

Since Burr and Warner began the investigation in January, the panel has interviewed dozens of intelligence and political officials to assess the extent of Russian interference in last year's election. Special counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating for months the Trump team's connections to Russians, and even the possibility of collusion.
