Prime Is Now Half-Price for Students

Despite it being not unreasonable, it's understandable that not every person can afford it. Students are typically among that category, but Amazon has announced new pricing for college kids.

Parents can sign up to either pre-approve each order via text or email (the default), set a spending limit for each order or to automatically approve all purchases.

On the other end of the spectrum, the move could be seen as an effort to indoctrinate teens and get them addicted to Amazon early, before they become loyal to a competitor.

Amazon (AMZN) now wants teenagers to shop on their own without mom and dad chiming in.

The system works by giving each teen his or her own login and password to use on Amazon's app. Teens will then send an invitation to their parent through either SMS or via email and "the parent" will choose the payment method and shipping addresses their teen can use when placing order.

Amazon now lets teens shop with their own account, but with parental approval

One major benefit this program offers families is the ability to share Prime membership features. "We've listened to families and have built a great experience for both teens and parents", said Michael Carr, vice president, Amazon Households.

For Amazon, getting teens to shop now could turn them into customers for the rest of their lives, said Brendan Witcher, an e-commerce industry analyst at Forrester.

Any time they make a purchase, teens will be able to include a note that explains (or argues) why they need the particular item. They can also take advantage of a six-month free trial before the monthly payments kick in. They can also cancel or return orders their teens have made.

Their credit card information will be hidden on the teen accounts, as will their purchase and browsing histories.
