In this way, Americans may have been cluelessly subsidizing North Korea's nuclear program, which has largely been condemned by the global community.

The news comes from an AP investigation, which also tracked products that go to Canada, Germany, and countries within the European Union.

Per the AP's report, some brands of salmon found in Walmart and ALDI stores was linked to North Korean workers based in China. North Korean minders ensure that workers do not have access to phones or email and that workers walk between the dormitory and their jobs in pairs- conditions that many in the US would refer to as "modern slavery".

Roughly 70 percent of all trade between China and North Korea is said to pass through the border city in Liaoning Province. Workers exported by North Korea are exploited for $200 million to $500 million per year that goes back to the regime.

Securing North Korea's missile launchers and nuclear, chemical and biological weapons sites would likely be a chief priority for China in the event of a major crisis involving its communist neighbour, analysts say, although Beijing so far is keeping mum on any plans.

John Connelly, president of the largest seafood trade association in the US, said the National Fisheries Institute was strongly encouraging all of its companies to investigate their supply chains "to ensure that wages to the workers, and are not siphoned off to support a risky dictator".

Western companies involved that responded to AP said forced labor and potential support for North Korea was unacceptable in their supply chains.

United Nations sanctions prevent North Korea from obtaining work permits for new workers abroad, but do nothing to constrict the workforce already overseas.

North Korean workers first arriving in China don't wear portrait badges of former national leaders Kim Il Sung or Kim Jong Il, RFA's source said.

Aldi said its United Kingdom stores are not linked to the factories. And it's up to corporations to be responsible for their own supply chains. Many pledged to investigate, others said they already cut ties with some suppliers.

U.S. companies aren't allowed to import products made by North Korean workers under a law signed by President Donald Trump in August.

"Combatting forced labor is a complex problem that no one company, industry, or government can tackle alone", she said, adding Wal-Mart was working with industry groups, governments, other retailers and NGOs to "create lasting, sustainable change".

The exact number of North Korean laborers overseas is unknown, but estimates are in the tens of thousands.
