US Open QF Preview: Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova renew rivalry

The kind of aggressive, fearless performance Kvitova put on in her fourth round match against the reigning Wimbledon champ, Garbiñe Muguruza, is probably what Maria Sharapova was hoping to do at this year's U.S. Open.

Muguruza remains ahead in a three-woman fight for world number one after the US Open but can be overtaken by Czech current number one Karolina Pliskova if she makes the final or Ukraine fourth seed Elina Svitolina if she reaches the semi-finals. "I'm very grateful that I can be part of it again", Kvitova said.

Muguruza came into the match losing only nine games in her first three matches, looking high on confidence as she goes for the number one ranking this fortnight as well.

The 5-foot-7 Schwartzman is the shortest quarterfinalist at Grand Slam tournament since Jaime Yzaga, also 5-7, at the 1994 U.S. Open, according to the ATP.

'I knew everything was just so tight and very close in the end of the match.

She is in the quarterfinals in NY for only the second time in 10 tournament appearances; the other such run came in 2015, when Kvitova lost at that stage to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta. I think maybe it's a bad sign sometimes, that I should be more appreciating than I am, ' she added.

The 13th seed and two-time Wimbledon victor rallied from 4-1 down in the opening set as she ousted a wasteful Muguruza to book her spot in the quarter-finals.

The Czech was sidelined for five months after being stabbed in her left playing hand by an intruder at her home and although the 13th seed has gradually moved towards her best level, Muguruza was the hot favourite under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The Ulefone MIX Will Be Launched Later This Month
Qualcomm China also took to the social media site to put aside rumours of the Mi Mix featuring a Snapdragon 836 chipset. Besides this, we would also like to point out the large screen-to-body ratio of the upcoming Mi Mix 2's display.

Kvitova's power from the baseline proved too much after she held serve before breaking again in the 11th game but the topsy-turvy set continued as Muguruza broke back immediately to force a tie-break, where the former composed herself to hit the front. Instead, she lives in the moment while focusing on what's next.

'I'm not thinking like that any more.

The 18-year-old Shapovalov advanced to the round of 16 at a major tournament for the first time when Kyle Edmund of Britain stopped playing because of a neck injury.

The two-time Wimbledon victor, who has never progressed beyond the quarters at Flushing Meadows, will now face 37-year-old Venus Williams for a place in the semi-final.

In Sharapova's first Slam since she tested positive for the banned blood booster meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open, she ousted second-ranked Simona Halep in the first round and served notice to any contender her game remains formidable.

"What she's gone through is unimaginable, unreasonable", said Williams. The perpetrator severed nerves and tendons in her dominant left hand, necessitating surgery.

Stephens has won 12 of her last 14 matches.
