Pelosi speech on DREAM Act interrupted by protesters

The event began calmly with a smiling Pelosi at the podium surrounded by Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Congressman Jared Huffman, community leaders and other Dreamers.

The group interrupted a Pelosi press conference in her home district to object to the framework of an agreement that would preserve the Dream Act while increasing border security. "Democrats created an out-of-control deportation machine and handed it over to Trump".

The president, Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., agreed to work on the plan during a rare dinner meeting last week.

The Democrats say a deal has been reached, but the White House denies it.

Protesters accused Pelosi and other democrats of deporting undocumented immigrants, asking for protection for 11 million undocumented immigrants across the country. Former President Barack Obama hit record deportation numbers during his first term, although removal rates fell later in his presidency. "It is unconscionable that we would accept any deal that essentially trades our safety for that of the safety of our family members and neighbors", Itzel Guillen, who works with the Southern Border Communities Coalition, said in a statement.

Pelosi and Schumer said their discussion with the president included the possibility of adding more immigration enforcement - which some immigration advocates are against - to legislation to address DACA. Her official Facebook page had been live-streaming the event and her aides encouraged out-of-town reporters to watch it, but the feed cut out as the protesters persisted.

Pelosi then tried to bring the press conference back to regular order, telling the protesters that it is "beautiful to our ears" to hear their opinion. They chanted: "Shut down ICE" and "All of us or none of us".

"You don't know what you're talking about", Pelosi told the group.
