Japan PM says time for N Korea dialogue is over

Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, who visited NY to attend the 72nd United Nations General Assembly, held a summit meeting with the heads of state of African countries mainly those are members of the UN Security Council.

As he officially announced that he would dissolve the lower house at a news conference on September 25, he highlighted the situation in North Korea as the most important focus for his campaign.

While the main parliamentary opposition Democratic Party is splintering, Abe faces a wild card challenge from a new national party being set up by an associate of Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike. "The decision to hold an election - the very source of democracy - should never be affected by North Korea".

Regarding the recent favoritism scandals that brought down his support ratings, Abe said he expects a "tough election" with harsh criticisms from opposition parties.

North Korea is "a threat to all humanity" that requires a major escalation of worldwide sanctions and perhaps military action to bring the regime to heel, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Wednesday.

The Nikkei poll was more positive for Abe's prospects than a Kyodo news agency survey that showed his LDP garnering 27.7 percent support, with 42.2 percent undecided.

While the Democratic Party is languishing with single-digit ratings, much will depend on whether it can form alliances with liberal opposition groups.

Abe is expected to announce the election at 6 p.m. briefing in Tokyo.

"Japan is facing a hard time considering the situation in North Korea". Abe has said that the polls won't distract his government from responding to North Korea.

A large majority of respondents - 78.8% - also said they were unhappy with the government's explanation of the land-sale scandal.

The crisis over North Korea has forced the country to re-examine its defense strategy.

"What we had to learn is that during the time this dialogue continued, North Korea had no intention whatsoever of abandoning its nuclear or missile development", he said.

Abe wants to "decisively change" the policy so that the increased portion will be appropriated for investment in helping child-rearing generations and the expansion of social security programs, he stressed.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe stepped up his rhetoric against North Korea in a speech to the United Nations, saying Kim Jong Un was getting away with worse behaviour than any dictator since the end of the Cold War.
