India shares concerns over situation in Myanmar's Rakhine (Second Lead, correcting headline)

"We share your concerns about the extremist violence in Rakhine state and violence against security forces and how innocent lives have been lost", Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a joint address to the media along with Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi following delegation-level talks between the two sides here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and the two leaders discussed ways to further cement the bilateral relations.

Modi's first bilateral visit here comes at a time when the Myanmarese government led by Nobel laureate Suu Kyi is facing worldwide pressure over the 125,000 Rohingya Muslims that have poured into Bangladesh in just two weeks after Myanmar's military launched a crackdown in the Rakhine state.

Modi is now on a three-day visit to Myanmar.

Modi's visit to Myanmar comes amid a spike in ethnic violence concerning Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state.

"Together both countries will ensure that terror is not allowed to take roots in our country", de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi said.

Talking about his government's development initiatives, he said that "we are not merely reforming India but are transforming India". Modi is also expected to raise the issue of the exodus of the ethnic Rohingyas into neighbouring countries.

On her part, Suu Kyi thanked India for the strong stand it took against the threat of terrorism on Myanmar's soil.

"The issue [Rohingya Muslims] is one of the biggest challenges Myanmar has to face, because you know that the situation in Rakhine has been hard for many decades and infact it goes right back to pre-colonial times", Suu Kyi told ANI.

- They also signed MoU on enhancing the cooperation on upgradation of the women's police training centre at Yamethin in Myanmar.

Myanmar is one of India's strategic neighbours and shares a 1,640-km-long border with a number of northeastern states including militancy-hit Nagaland and Manipur.

Geographically, Myanmar is the first stop for India's Act East policy. When I am travelling, I make it a point to interact with the Indian diaspora, PM Modi said adding that the Indian diaspora has contributed to the development of wherever they have settled.

From Nay Pyi Taw, the Prime Minister went to the ancient city of Bagan where he visited the Ananda temple before coming to Yangon.

Prime Minister Modi began his tour on Sunday (September 3) and attended the plenary session of the ninth BRICS summit in China's Xiamen, where he called for a greater cooperation between the BRICS member-nations for ensuring global stability and peace.

Earlier today, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome from Myanmar President Htin Kyaw before the two inspected the guard of honour in Naypyidaw.
