Cameroon are angry after being humiliated by Nigeria - Pinnick

From right, Super Eagles players Victor Moses, Odion Ighalo and Ogenyi Onazi celebrate their resounding victory over Cameroon.

The Super Eagles against all expectations thrashed the African champions 4-0 in Uyo in the first leg tie of the back-to-back World Cup encounter.

Nigeria could become the first African team to earn a slot in Russian Federation as early as Tuesday (next 48 hours) if they defeat the Cameroonians on Monday in Yaounde and Zambia fail to beat Algeria at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida on Tuesday.

"We pledged to win this match for Carl", said Germany-born Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr after a 4-0 rout of Cameroon in Uyo this weekend.

"There is no pressure anymore on Monday, Nigeria have nine points, we have two points", Broos said.

"There is something like honour, we will defend that on Monday in Yaounde". "We would have to win our remaining three matches and hope Nigeria lose their last three".

US Open comeback brought to a halt for Maria Sharapova
Maria Sharapova's first Grand Slam tournament in 19 months ended with defeat by Anastasija Sevastova in the US Open fourth round. Williams took the first set against Navarro without issue at 6-3, but was broken on her first serve in the second set.

"I watched the game against the Cameroonians on Friday and I am sure you have the ability to conquer them again in their own territory. I don't think this is possible". Broos admitted that Cameroon's World Cup qualification hopes have been dashed.

They sit five points behind leaders Uganda after Thomas Partey equalised for them five minutes from time in Kumasi.

"We are ready for a big fight".

"They actually played a fine football today; I commend them for their brilliant performances, they have made the country proud and I want them to maintain this level of play".

The result means Ghana stay third in Group E with just two points from three matches, while it was a first point of the campaign for Congo.
