California Lawmakers Send 'Sanctuary State' Bill To Governor's Desk

The California Legislature Saturday passed a "sanctuary state" bill to protect immigrants without legal residency in the US, part of a broader push by Democrats to counter expanded deportation orders under the Trump administration.

That original bill - which was opposed by the California Police Chiefs Association and California State Sheriffs' Association - would have restricted state and local law enforcement from using any resources for immigration enforcement unless the person in question has been convicted of a "violent or serious felony".

State legislators approved a measure early Saturday morning that would make California a sanctuary state.

California's immigration laws are considered among the friendliest in the country and the state is often referred to as a "sanctuary state".

It prohibits law enforcement officials from asking about a person's immigration status or participating in immigration enforcement efforts. Jerry Brown, who announced his support after the top state Senate leader agreed to water down the bill and preserve authority for jail and prison officials to cooperate with immigration officers in many cases. But they'll be barred from transferring immigrants to federal authorities if their rap sheet includes only minor offenses.

Illinois' Republican Governor signed a bill last month protecting people from being detained because they are the subject of an immigration-related warrant.

McGuire said the bill "helps to reestablish desperately needed transparency in the White House". 386 cleared its final vote in the California Assembly 56-22 with one abstaining. "It's going to protect the criminal at the expense of the law abiding citizen".

This was the first year of the Legislature's two-year session.

"If California politicians pass this bill, they will be prioritizing politics over the safety and security of their constituents", Homan said in a statement this week.

It came a day after a federal judge barred the U.S. Justice Department from denying public-safety grants to so-called sanctuary cities in retaliation for limiting cooperation with the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration.

"President Trump's blatant disregard for the tradition of releasing tax returns is risky to our democracy", said California State Sen.
