Two million CeX customers warned of stolen details after huge data hack

The breach affects CEX's registered website customers only.

Following the breach, CeX admitted that even though they had a robust security programme in place, additional measures were required to prevent such a sophisticated attack.

The company says that it's working with the police and other "relevant authorities" to identify how the hackers bypassed its security systems.

Data of up to two million customers has been stolen from games store Cex.

.

CeX has also said that in a "small number of instances" encrypted data from credit and debit cards up to 2009 may have been accessed, but that no live payment information has been taken as those cards will have expired and the company no longer stores financial information.

It's that time again when we reset the imaginary internet sign to read "0 days without a United Kingdom data breach". The breach has potentially put 2 million customers at risk of their personal details being exposed.

Civilians trapped as violence scorches Myanmar's Rakhine State
This photo, taken on December 25, 2016, shows Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar who tried to cross the Naf River into Bangladesh. The government has declared the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) a terrorist organisation.

The company says they are taking the matter "extremely seriously", and has issued guidelines and advice for customers whose personal data may have been accessed.

"No further financial information has been shared", CeX said in a statement, noting that there is now no indication that in-store personal membership information has been compromised. They're emailing all affected customers with guidance on how to proceed but recommend in the interim that anyone holding an online account with them changes their password; as an additional security measure, if you use the same password across multiple accounts we'd recommend changing your password across all affected accounts as well.

The retailer claims no in-store customers should be affected, only online ones-and although passwords are not stored in plain text, customers are advised to create a new one as "a third party could still determine your original password and could attempt to use it across other, unrelated services".

CeX customers can trade gadgets and video games in any of their 300 stores across the UK. The store also sells smartphones and PCs.

As usual in these situations, the message is to not only change your password, but change the password of any other site that you've given the same password to.
