There are still a few soft spots on Sam Kanizay's legs where sea lice ripped into his flesh but the Melbourne teenager is nearly ready to leave hospital.

Doctors were initially stumped about what had caused the excessive bleeding, but Mr Kanizay said the medics now know what they're dealing with.

Searching for answers about his son's mysterious injury, Sam's father Jarrod Kanizay returned to the same beach spot where his son was bitten.

"I walked out and saw what I thought was sand covering my calf and shook it off, and by the time I'd walked across the sand ..."

Dr Walker-Smith said the creatures were a valuable part of the marine environment and that "if we didn't have them we would have a sea filled with dead and decaying fish". "If it's sea lice, then it's a pretty dramatic example", said A. Poore.

They are commonly known as sea fleas or sea lice, although Walker-Smith noted that sea lice was more commonly used to refer to isopods, a different type of crustacean. Most amphipods are herbivores while others are omnivorous scavengers and "some non-parasitic ones are particularly fond of blood if available". The wounds kept bleeding following attempts to wipe down his legs, and when the numbing effect of the cold water wore off and the pain increased, his father Jarrod took him to hospital where bewildered doctors tried to piece together what happened.

Sea fleas are are about half-a-centimetre to one-centimetre long and tend to clean up the fish carcasses found on the sea floor.

He said the best solution would be for the MA legislature to create a law that would criminalize coerced suicide in the state. Constitutions", Matthew Segal , legal director at the ACLU of MA , said. "He dragged Michelle Carter into this".

"There's no need to stay out of the water", Reina wrote.

The veteran marine researcher said Kanizay's injury was much like a graze and he should not fear returning to the water.

Sam is not the first Melburnian attacked by sea fleas. Some researchers have theorised the amphipods released an anti-coagulant as they bit the teenager, a reaction sometimes seen in bites from leeches and other species of crustaceans.

In an incident likened to a scene from a horror film, Sam Kanizay (16) went to Brighton beach in Melbourne on Saturday and spent 30 minutes standing in the water to soothe his legs after a football game.

"We'd need to have seen or caught them in the act on the teenager's legs", said Norenburg.

"He (Kanizay) must have been very, very cold and he wouldn't have felt it", added Weir, who experienced a similar injury on his forehead after a night dive 40 years ago.

Associate Professor Reina said sea fleas should not alarm people or deter them from swimming.
