Trump's attorney previously denied POTUS involvement in Russian Federation statement

U.S. President Donald Trump signed the U.S. Congress's new sanctions bill which steps up sanctions on North Korea, Iran and Russian Federation.

But that changed when the president made a decision to personally dictate the statement himself, suggesting the meeting with the Russian lawyer was to discuss "a program about the adoption of Russian children".

The Trump team was in Germany for the G-20 summit when it got word The New York Times was preparing to publish an account of the meeting.

But the emails released by Trump's eldest son showed he took the meeting because of a promise of compromising information about then-Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's campaign.

President Trump signed a bill Wednesday that enforces sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea, but he bashed the legislation for being "significantly flawed".

The adviser's fears don't appear to be misplaced.

The White House's confirmation of the president's involvement piqued the interest of investigators, including Senator Mark R. Warner of Virginia, the senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is looking at Russia's interference in last year's election.

The measure would also apply terrorism sanctions to Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard and enforce an arms embargo. The officials said the Iranian boat is believed to have been operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

"The statement that Don Jr. issued is true", Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

Donald Trump Jr. with his father, Donald Trump, on the night of the Iowa Caucus in Des Moines, Iowa, on February 1, 2016.

One of Trump Sr.'s personal attorneys, Jay Sekulow, told ABC News on July 12 that the president "wasn't involved" in the formulation of the statement and "didn't sign off on anything". "But it seems a bit odd, the president of the United States comes in and drafts this statement that is just factually wrong".

Mr Trump rushed to his son's defence and lambasted what he calls a political "witch hunt".

After initially trying to dodge a bullet with the claims about Russia's adoption policy, Trump Jr admitted that the meeting had in fact been about getting information to discredit Clinton even though the meeting "went nowhere". Mueller sent a request to White House officials to preserve any documents relating to the 2016 meeting.

"So as far as you know, as far as this incident is concerned, this is all of it?"
