Sensex, Nifty record new highs ahead of RBI policy decision

On BSE, 1,056 stocks were advancing whereas 1,618 stocks were lagging when the session ended.

On Monday, the benchmark indices closed in the green on the back of broadly positive global cues and intense buying activities in banking, consumer durables and capital goods stocks.

The auto sub-index of NSE, Nifty Auto, rose 1.53 per cent, led by gains in Eicher Motors, Hero MotoCorp, Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki.

Shares of Country's largest lender, State Bank of India, was the top gainer by climbing 4.46 per cent after it slashed interest rate on savings account deposits by 50 bps to 3.5 per cent on balance of up to Rs 1 crore.

Participants were upbeat about the Reserve Bank's monetary policy meet tomorrow, which is expected to announce a cut in rates, traders said.

Automakers have increased production to fill up the gap in inventory prior to the launch of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and will therefore ship more vehicles to dealers, said Mahantesh Marilinga, senior research analyst at Finquest Securities.

The shares were led by Tech Mahindra which rose to nearly 4.61%, both on Sensex as well as Nifty, a day after it reported a 6.57% rise in net profit in the June quarter.

However, the broader Nifty was trading slightly up by 1.75 points, or 0.02 per cent, at 10,078.85. While the BSE Sensex surged 205.6 points, or 0.63%, to close at 32514.94 - a level that breached previous closing record of 32383.30 hit on July 27.

Asian shares ticked up on Tuesday as investors looked to a barrage of economic data around the world to confirm recent signs the global economy is in fine fettle with inflation staying well contained.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.28 per cent higher yesterday.

The S&P 500 information technology dipped 0.53 per cent, with Facebook falling 1.86 per cent and Alphabet, Google's parent company, down 1.34 per cent.
