Russian Federation says United States sanctions are a blow to 'bilateral cooperation'

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Monday the Trump administration will respond by September 1 to Moscow's demand that hundreds of diplomats leave the usa mission to Russian Federation.

In their meeting, Lavrov said, Tillerson agreed to continue a dialogue between U.S. Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov.

It went on to say that the sanctions have " become another link in the chain of steps unfriendly and unsafe for worldwide stability, striking a powerful blow to the prospects for bilateral cooperation.

More than one week after President Vladimir Putin announced he will expel 755 us diplomats and workers and confiscate two State Dept. properties in Russia, President Donald Trump has not even acknowledged the attack on America and its emissaries.

Those comments came a day after Trump signed the new sanctions against Moscow, a move Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said amounted to a "full-scale trade war" against his country.

"We are confident that there is no alternative to the resumption of political process, particularly the six-party talks", Lavrov said.

Thornton says the USA wants to ensure that with the new sanctions, there's "not this kind of episodic back and forth that we've seen".

The U.S. wants to retain ties with Russian Federation despite alleged interference in the U.S. presidential election, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Monday.

Lawmakers in Congress passed the bill as a response to Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election, its involvement in the Syrian conflict and its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region. "Naturally, such actions [the U.S. sanctions], including the illegal seizure of our diplomatic property since December a year ago, could not be left unanswered".

In addition, the USA official revealed that he had warned Lavrov that Washington was deciding on a response to the Kremlin's decision to order a cut in the size of the USA mission in Moscow.

According to Lavrov, Tillerson had asked him during the meeting on what measures the Kremlin intends to take in response to new economic sanctions imposed on them by the USA government.

Russian Federation had also previously put forward a proposal, along with China, calling for North Korea to refrain from conducting any more nuclear and missile tests, in exchange for the USA and South Korea ceasing large-scale military exercises in the region.

Nevertheless, Tillerson said the United States still wants to work with Moscow and that it was "not useful" to cut all ties based on one issue.

Lavrov said Russian Federation and the USA had agreed to resume a suspended high-level diplomatic channel and Washington would send its Ukraine envoy to Moscow for negotiations.
